Wisdom Teeth and Oral Surgery

Oral surgery may include removal of difficult or impacted teeth, with treatment planned according to the tooth position, symptoms, nearby anatomy and individual surgical risk.

When should impacted wisdom teeth be assessed?

Assessment is appropriate when there is recurrent gum infection, pain, decay, damage to the adjacent tooth or concern about cystic change. An OPG is usually the starting X-ray; CBCT is used selectively when three-dimensional detail of the lower-jaw nerve, upper sinus, roots or nearby structures may change treatment planning.
